SOME NEWSPAPERS:

SEAN FINE The Globe and Mail Friday, April 21, 2000

..."Why did God create Adam and Eve?" counters Esther Gelcer, a psychologist. "There is no society in which people raise children on their own." ... Dr. Gelcer knows what Ms. Carson means. ... "It's the call of nature. That's why God created Adam and Eve. In the Bible it said Eve was created to be a help in opposition to him. In other words, she's there to help him by giving him another perspective and that's very important in a partnership."... The key to avoiding the depression and anxiety faced by so many single mothers is to take time for yourself and build a support system, says Dr. Gelcer, a former chief psychologist for the child and family program at the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry in Toronto. (She is now in private practice.)... Copyright (c) 2000 Globe Information Services

Cries and Dolls The volatile world of girls' friendships By Carmel Suttor

..Gelcer says that these girl groups become more prevalent in the preteen years because this is when a child's focus shifts from adults to peers, and she becomes more independent. Greater freedom can be frightening, though, so they still like to have someone (but not mom!) tell them what to do. Emma's experience is an example of group members teaching one another to preserve the rules of the group - and group cohesion is more important than any one person, says Gelcer. ... ...If you discover that your daughter is one of the main perpetrators of group nastiness, Gelcer has these words of advice: "It is your duty to teach her not to do it. Don't let it go; talk to her about it. Parents set the standards and need to uphold them. We differ from chimpanzees because we have the moral capabilities of compassion and empathy.... "When your child is excluded, it's excruciating. But you can support her. Often talking to the group makes a big difference." It's best to have a teacher or impartial adult do this, rather than an angry parent, though - and the timing is critical. "You need to intervene as the group is forming, not as it's dispersing," says Gelcer. (Sometimes, she warns, the group will accept your child but then exclude another, because they need that scapegoat to define themselves.) April 2000
